  • A Day in Ghent - 2014

Bruges is a beautiful little town, while Ghent is quite large and very active, and it has been said that "... you get the feeling that this is a city first and tourist destination second, in sharp contrast to Bruges." Getting off the train and making our way into town  you could tell that this was going to be a different experience,  but not in a bad way. We had to wander a little to find the tourist information office, but once we did the friendly reception assured us that it was going to be a good day. Armed with…

  • A Day in Bruges - 2014

The trains from Brussels to Bruges run pretty much on the hour. We left early hoping to avoid crowds, but that strategy didn't work. The off-and-on rains got us and the crowds a bit damp, so we ducked into a local museum for a bit. Emerging just as the weather began clearing enough for us to roam about town, we ate a good lunch at "Tom's Diner",  an upscale though charming eatery rather off the beaten path. Fortified by a hearty meal and clearing skies I was able to capture a few good images. All in all it was a very…

    Brussels – II - 2014

Hotel breakfasts are not generally satisfying, but when shared with friends, they are always better. So it was in Brussels. We tentatively planned our tour of Brussels with Niels and Jette over breakfast, and shortly after began the day’s exploration. Following the route that Jeannie and I took the day before, we revisited the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, now bathed in morning light, then returned to the Grote Markt, which was already filled with people. Wandering further we took in so many sights that are impossible to remember except through photos. All along our way, the four…

    Brussels – I - 2014

The luggage had been packed the night before. We were ready to begin the next leg of our journey as we went down to breakfast and noted that there were two additional places set. As we began with our coffee and fresh croissants, another couple came into the room. They had a brief conversation with our host, in French, and then introduced themselves. Americans currently living in Paris, Alyse & Peter were delightful breakfast companions and we had a wonderful conversation. They both speak French fluently, and provided several helpful tips for our future travels. After breakfast they thoughtfully suggested…

Calories Coming and Going - 2014

Forgive me dear readers for getting out of sequence, I am writing here about Brussels, Belgium and well, based on the timeline of the blog, we haven't gotten here yet. I am about five days behind real time, but after a bottle of wine with dinner, so be it. Jeannie and I have two different ways of looking at things ... duh. These two images kind of say it all. One is of her purchase of high quality, expensive, Belgian chocolate. There are chocolate shops on every street, LOTS of chocolate shops. But Neuhaus is supposed to be some of…
