Before we even walked into the Church of the Jacobins in Toulouse, I was worried that the clear skies, and bright morning light was going to be problematic. We had gone to this particular Dominican monastery, built in 1229, more to visit the beautiful, adjacent cloister. But the light was intense and contrasty, and therefore difficult to capture deep shadows as well as the bright highlights (which I did successfully, but that is for later).
As we exited through the church, I made some images of the beautiful stained-glass windows. This one however, was different. Though I didn’t notice it at the time, the light pouring through a larger, three-paneled window out of the frame to the left struck the wall just under the window that I was capturing. The result was what appears to be a cascade of colored light streaming from the window and down the wall.
This image stood out as I edited the day’s shoot, and I thought it would be appreciated as much for its serendipity as for any other merits. I hope you think so as well.
